UPGRADE YOUR SMOKE ALARMS – STAY SAFE

Updated Legislation

By 1 January 2027, it will be mandatory for all private homes, townhouses, and units in Queensland to have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms installed.

As of 1 January 2017, legislation mandates that all smoke alarms must meet Australian Standard 3786-2014, requiring existing alarms to be replaced with interconnected models.

When one smoke alarm sounds, all alarms in the home will activate, giving you extra time to safely evacuate.

Requirements

To meet safety standards, smoke alarms must:

  • Be photoelectric.
  • Comply with the AS3786-2014 standard (look for the marking on the alarm).
  • Be hardwired with a secondary power source, or powered by a 10-year non-removable battery.
  • Be interconnected, ensuring that when one alarm sounds, all alarms in the home activate.
  • Not contain ionisation sensors.

Installing Smoke Alarms

For private homes, townhouses, and units, smoke alarms must be installed in the following locations:

  • On every level of the dwelling.
  • In each bedroom.
  • In hallways that link bedrooms to the rest of the home.
    • If no hallway exists, place an alarm between the bedroom and the rest of the floor.
    • If there are no bedrooms on a level, at least one alarm must be installed in the most likely path to the exit.
