Managed Connection Solutions
Due to the increased household demand that EV Chargers have added to the electricity network Energex have requirements that must be followed to help reduce the load on the grid during peak times.
Energex offer two new managed connection options that utilize a "network device" for dedicated EV chargers at locations with a supply of 100A per phase or lower.
These network devices can be used to temporarily disconnect power to the dedicated EV charger during periods of high demand on our network.
For Level 1 Charging using either a 10amp or 15 amp GPO there is no need for a network device and managed connection.
For Level 2 Charging using a dedicated single phase charger that draws more than 20 Amps it must be connected by one of the following arrangements:
If your home has three-phase wiring, you can install a dedicated three phase charger with a capacity of up to 22kW, provided it is connected and switched across all three phases simultaneously.
This configuration enables faster charging without the need for active device management.
If you don't have three-phase wiring, consult with AE Electric to see if upgrading your wiring is possible, and to get a free quote.
There are 3 main types of EV Home chargers which we will discuss in detail below.
Slow AC Home Charging or "Trickle Charging"
Typically offers power between 1.4kW and 3.7kW.
This method uses a standard power outlet at home or at work.
After charging for about an hour, the vehicle can gain a range of 10 to 20 km.
This type of charging is often done overnight or for several hours during the day.
This type of charger is more suitable for plug-in hybrid vehicles as they require less charging time.
Fast AC Home Charging
Level 2 charging invloves a dedicated charger with its own plug or socket that requires Installation by a licensed electrician.
Typically offers power between 7kW to 22kW.
Uses Alternating Current (AC) and come in either single phase or three phase configurations.
After charging for about an hour, the vehicle can gain a range of 30 to 130km.
This type of charging is suited for full Electric Vehicles and are more convenient for those who need to charge their car quicker either for practicality or to take advantage of special offers from electricity providers.
Fast DC Commercial Charging
Level 3 chargers use Direct current (DC) for the fastest possible charging.
Typically offers power from 25 kW to 350 kW DC.
After charging for about an hour, the vehicle can gain a range of 150 to 300km.
These can be found in public places along highways and urban areas.
